Solar protection façade made of flexible mesh from GKD

The flexible Escale design mesh delivers solar protection on the façade of the Grand Theatre des Cordeliers.

The three-dimensional membrane made of anodized spiral mesh with sun protection properties envelopes the façade without hiding it. The flexibility of the Escale design mesh (made of gold-anodized aluminum in this case) and a bold support structure were what made this spectacular façade design of French architect Dominique Perrault possible.

The concave shape softens the purist austerity of the structure and gives it an appearance of lightness.

During daylight hours, the mesh façade reflects the majority of the solar energy striking the building and thereby significantly reduces the solar input. At night, the semi-transparent solar protection façade lends the building depth and elegance.
