20. January 20233D-façade made of stainless steel spiral mesh: Maison Folie
The stainless steel spiral mesh Escale 2.8 x 1 transforms a former textile factory into a spectacular art complex – Maison Folie in Lille-Wazemmes, France. The breathtaking mesh façade shows a versatility of three-dimensional design that could only be made possible by the flexible formability of the stainless steel mesh used.
The fascinating semitransparent mesh façade conveys a sheer spatial depth. It comes across as technically modern as well as artistically abstract and organically concrete – like a “skin” in the true sense of the word. The geometric shape of the building is dissolved by the mesh façade′s richness of form. The structural shell manifests itself as an area open to association, a large-format objet d′art that is free for interpretation. The shimmering mesh façade serves as a visual filter between inside and outside, while presenting itself as a standalone space in the architectonic dialog with the outer surroundings. The fabric façade billows voluminously around the building, while an oversized peephole affords a glimpse of the art complex behind it.
