LED-MEDIAMESH Shapes the New Bluestone Travel Plaza in West Virginia

Along Interstate 77, the Bluestone Travel Plaza has emerged as a new destination for travelers; in addition to its role as transportation infrastructure, it has also become a striking visual feature. As part of the replacement of facilities that were more than 30 years old, an architecturally integrated LED MEDIAMESH installation was installed, displaying information and images of West Virginia’s landscape and thereby significantly enhancing the site.

Architectural Brief and Project Context

The construction of the new Travel Plaza aimed to create a modern service facility for car and truck drivers. At the same time, the goal was to develop a design element that would remain visible amidst conventional signage without disrupting traffic flow. The planning and implementation were based on collaboration between architects, technology partners, and installation companies. The LED technology was provided by Expromo, while GKD-USA was responsible for the structural design and fabrication.

Metal mesh with integrated LED technology

The MEDIAMESH system combines stainless steel mesh with integrated LED light points. The screens achieve a transparency of approximately 50 percent, enabling both a clear line of sight and defined image reproduction. The integration of the LEDs into the mesh creates a robust and weather-resistant unit suitable for long-term outdoor applications. The system was oriented so that it is clearly visible to passing traffic without causing distraction.

Implementation and Technical Features

It took about a year from the initial concept to the final installation. The process benefited from close coordination between the planning teams, the manufacturer, and the installation partners. GKD-USA developed the support structure and manufactured the mesh elements, while Expromo provided the LED components, wiring, and installation support. The lighter weight of the MEDIAMESH modules facilitated installation and reduced the demands on the supporting structure. The project was completed on schedule without any significant challenges.

Clear Design Integrates Infrastructure and Communication

The project demonstrates how information media and landscape integration can be combined within a functional transportation facility. This visual integration reinforces the site’s identity and adds communicative value to its purely practical use. At the same time, the safety of road users is ensured, as the semi-transparent structure and controlled brightness have been specifically tailored to the surrounding environment.
