Upstream refers to the process side before a filter element—the feed region that supplies the slurry or gas to be treated. Upstream conditions largely determine filtration stability: particle-size distribution, viscosity, solids concentration, and turbulence intensity govern how the cake builds and how evenly flow is distributed. Proper upstream design includes feed headers, distribution trays, or baffles to ensure uniform loading and to prevent localized blinding or channeling. Monitoring upstream pressure and solids content helps correlate process fluctuations with downstream performance, allowing predictive adjustments before product quality is affected.
