A pore is a void or channel within a porous medium that permits fluid flow. In woven meshes, pores are geometric apertures; in nonwovens or cakes, they form irregular tortuous paths. Pore geometry, connectivity, and surface chemistry determine permeability, retention, and fouling behaviour. Smooth, uniform pores promote stable flux and clean release, while rough or compressible structures encourage deep lodging and blinding. Material selection, filament diameter, weave, and finishing influence pore characteristics. QA uses porometry, permeability, and bubble point measurements to ensure consistent pore behaviour during service.
