10. March 2025Particle Size Analysis
Particle size analysis encompasses a wide range of methods for determining the size distribution of particles in powders, granulates, and suspensions. It is essential for quality assurance in many industries, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, construction materials, and food. One of the oldest and most commonly used methods is sieve analysis. In this method, a sample is passed through a set of test sieves with decreasing mesh sizes to separate the particles into defined fractions.
For very fine or agglomerated substances, alternative methods are used, such as laser diffraction, image analysis, sedimentation, or the previously mentioned wet sieving. The choice of method depends on particle shape, size range, and accuracy requirements. The results of particle size analysis provide key metrics such as D10, D50, and D90, as well as median and mode, which describe the distribution. These values influence both the physical properties of a product – such as flowability, reactivity, and solubility – and filtration efficiency.
GKD manufactures high-precision mesh fabrics and analytical sieves that ensure reproducible and standard-compliant measurements. Our solutions cover a wide measurement range from a few micrometers to several millimeters. With process-specific designs, such as electrolytically polished wires and optimized weaves, tight tolerances can be maintained and wear minimized. We also offer guidance on selecting the appropriate measurement method and on standards such as ISO 3310 to ensure that particle size analysis results are reliable and traceable.
