Leno weave (also known as cross-weave or gauze weave) is a specialized weaving technique in which warp threads are twisted together in pairs during the weaving process to securely lock the weft yarns in place. This results in an open, mesh-like fabric with relatively large openings that remains dimensionally stable because the twisted warp threads prevent the crossing points from shifting.
The outcome is a fabric that is both open and stable. Leno fabrics are used in applications where high permeability and shape retention are required. In industrial settings, they are found in drying and conveyor belts or as filter substrates, where air and liquids need to pass through while the fabric must remain stable under stress. In architecture, leno fabrics are sometimes used as decorative or functional elements: the gauze-like structure allows light and air to pass through, making it ideal for transparent curtains, sun protection systems, or lightweight façade cladding. Thanks to the unique cross-twisting of the threads, these fabrics maintain their shape and prevent the mesh openings from stretching—even under mechanical stress.
