A filter is a device that separates components of a mixture by passing the feed through a medium that retains targeted species while allowing the desired phase to pass. Industrial filters range from cake filters (vacuum and pressure belt filters, presses, candle and leaf filters) to depth and cartridge systems, each optimised for different solids loadings, particle sizes and cleanliness requirements. The heart of any filter is the medium: woven monofilament cloths and wire meshes for sharp, cleanable cut‑off; nonwovens and sintered structures for depth capture and dirt‑holding capacity. Effective filters pair the right medium with suitable supports and drainage layers, robust seals and seams to prevent bypass, and control systems that hold either flow or pressure constant within validated envelopes. Performance is verified by filtrate quality (turbidity, particle counts), ∆p/flux trends, wash efficiency and dryness at discharge. Well‑specified filters deliver reproducible, energy‑efficient separations and long service life in demanding B2B operations.
