Feed is the incoming slurry or liquid presented to a filter. Its properties—solids concentration, particle‑size and shape distribution, rheology, temperature, pH, ionic strength and the presence of oils or surfactants—determine achievable clarity, flux, washing and dryness. Stable operation starts with consistent feed preparation: correct dosing and mixing for coagulation/flocculation, temperature control to set viscosity, and distribution systems that spread the feed evenly across the cloth. Upsets such as fines excursions, viscosity spikes or oil carry‑over show up immediately as ∆p jumps, clarity loss or re‑entrainment. Good SOPs link feed analytics (PSD, density, conductivity, turbidity) to setpoint adjustments for flux, TMP and wash ratio, ensuring product remains on‑spec with minimal energy and water use.
