Cross-flow filtration, also called tangential flow filtration, is a filtration process in which the main flow of the suspension runs parallel to the surface of the filter medium. Unlike dead-end filtration, where the liquid hits the membrane perpendicularly, the filter cake in cross-flow filtration is largely washed away. This keeps the filter permeable for longer and allows continuous operation. The driving force is the transmembrane pressure, which is the pressure difference between the product side and the filtrate side. The method is used in biotechnology, blood plasma processing, the food industry, and water treatment. GKD supplies specially developed fabrics for cross-flow membranes and support structures that allow high flow rates and low fouling. On request, our experts provide advice on designing cross-flow systems to minimize energy consumption and maximize product quality.
