Abrasion resistance describes the ability of a material to withstand mechanical wear caused by friction. It therefore describes how resistant a surface is to constant rubbing, scratching or grinding. Woven wire cloth or technical textiles with high abrasion resistance often use special materials (e.g. hard stainless steels) or surface treatments to better resist abrasion caused by particles or contact with other surfaces.
In filtration applications with abrasive media such as sand, slurries or powders, high abrasion resistance is crucial to prevent premature abrasion or damage to the fabric. Good abrasion resistance extends the service life of filters and screens and reduces downtime and maintenance costs. It is also relevant in architecture (e.g. for façade fabrics or protective grids): abrasion-resistant fabrics retain their appearance and strength for longer despite the effects of the weather or cleaning measures. An abrasion-resistant fabric therefore offers a longer service life and reliability even under harsh conditions.
